Good to know

The Space: An Authentic Blue Ridge Experience Tucked beside the rushing Elk River, this hand-hewn 1884 log cabin offers a rare blend of historic preservation and real comfort. Whether you're visiting for a winter ski trip or a summer river escape, this is the quintessential North Carolina mountain retreat. Cabin Highlights: Riverside Living: Unwind in the private hot tub or gather around the fire pit directly overlooking the water. Skier’s Paradise: Located directly off Tynecastle Hwy for easy, reliable access to Sugar Mountain Resort (5 mins) and Beech Mountain (12 mins). Inside: Featuring a King primary suite, radiant floor heating, plush linens, and premium Public Goods toiletries. Remote Work Ready: Equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi and a Smart TV for seamless "work from the mountains" stays. Winter Access & Safety: The main road we sit just off is a state route and is plowed. Our own road is gravel and is not plowed. From November through March we recommend 4WD or AWD, and during active snowfall we ask that you have it. Historic Note: To preserve the original 1884 logs, the cabin does not have central AC. However, at an elevation of 4,000+ feet, the crisp mountain air and our provided fans keep the cabin refreshingly cool all summer long.

Other Details to Note

Essential Guest Info & House Rules Winter Travel & Accessibility: Safety is our priority in the NC High Country. Because our own road is gravel and is not plowed, we recommend 4WD or AWD for arrivals between November and March, and we ask that you have it during active snowfall. The cabin is located directly off the well-maintained Tynecastle Highway, but mountain weather can change rapidly. Mountain Climate (No Central AC): To preserve the integrity of our historic 1884 log cabin, there is no central air conditioning. However, the elevation ensures crisp, cool nights. We provide window units and fans, and most guests find the natural mountain breeze more than sufficient. Avg Summer Highs: 70s°F Avg Summer Lows: 50s°F Wildlife & Nature: You are staying in a true Blue Ridge Mountain setting. It is common to see deer, turkey, and the occasional black bear. We provide bear-proof trash solutions and ask that no food be left outdoors to keep our local wildlife wild! Property Policies: Pet-Free: To protect the historic materials of the cabin, we do not allow pets. No Smoking: This is a strictly non-smoking property. Firewood: We provide a starter bundle of wood for the fireplace; additional bundles are available for purchase from our back porch stores via our online portal or nearby in Banner Elk. About the creek: it runs just steps from the cabin and it is not fenced. Children play in it happily and it is one of the best parts of staying here, but the bank drops off in places and young ones need an adult with them.

I've always wanted to stay in an old mountain cabin along the river, and this listing was exactly what I was looking for! It was such a pleasant, low-key experience. Veronica was a great host, checking in to make sure our stay was going well and that we had everything we needed. We never needed anything, but her replies were always quick when we sent messages through the entire process. Cabin was well stocked with the essentials. The river was also a nice amenity, along with the wood-burning fireplace. If you have kids, they'll love hiking up or down the river, and the mumerous different games thats available. If you are looking for a great experience (host & place to stay), look no further!

My wife and I took our 6, 3, and 1 year olds to the cabin for a little mountain get away. It was an amazing trip adn are already talking about the next time we can go. The cabin was exactly what we were looking for as it was rustic AND had all the technology we needed and Veronica was great to work with. Most of our time was out and about but it was a great place to go at the end of the day and have a fire, some food, spend some time with family and relax. 10/10 recommend checking the cabin out.
